ABOUT DJARRNGAN

Created in Broome. Inspired by Country. Expressed through art and design.

THE DESIGNER

DJARRNGAN is an independent Australian swim and resort-wear label founded by Gabrielle Rahman, a First Nations artist and fashion designer, and a Djugun, Yawuru and Jabirr Jabirr woman from Broome, Western Australia.

With a lifelong passion for art, fashion and design beginning at the age of ten, Gabrielle's creative journey has been shaped by her connection to Country, culture and the natural environment. She studied Visual Arts in 2002 and Fashion and Textile Design in 2003 and 2006, developing the creative foundations that continue to inform her work as an artist, fashion designer and creator.

DJARRNGAN brings these influences together through original artwork, distinctive textile designs and contemporary swim and resort wear.

THE DJARRNGAN EXPERIENCE

Saltwater dips.

Sunset gazes. White sands.

Strolls along the beach.

Shadows beneath the waves.

These words capture more than the beauty of coastal living. They hold a deeper reflection of Gabrielle's life, creative journey and connection to the natural world.

Shadows beneath the waves speaks to what exists beyond the surface — the unseen world beneath the ocean, its marine life and natural formations, as well as the experiences, truths, light and shadows that have shaped Gabrielle throughout her life as an artist, fashion designer and creator.

Together, these words express the layers of meaning behind DJARRNGAN: a brand shaped by place, personal history, cultural connection and a lifelong relationship with art and design.

THE ORIGINS OF DJARRNGAN

At the heart of DJARRNGAN is Riddell Beach in Broome — a place of deep personal and cultural significance to Gabrielle and the origin of her black-lipped oyster dreaming totem.

More than a coastal landscape, Riddell Beach is central to her story, her connection to Country and the cultural identity behind the label. It is also connected to the Seven Sisters Dreaming stories shared with her by her mother, carrying family knowledge, memory and a sense of belonging.

The black-lipped oyster, represented through the DJARRNGAN name and creative identity, holds a deep connection to this place. Riddell Beach is where the story and inspiration of DJARRNGAN take form — the place from which the brand's creative vision originates.

SALT WATER ARCHITECTURE

Inspired by Riddell Beach, Broome and the wider Kimberley coastline, Salt Water Architecture explores the natural character of the coast through art, colour, texture and design.

The collection draws inspiration from the meeting of land and sea, the movement of salt water, coastal formations, sun-washed landscapes and the distinctive environment of the Indian Ocean.

It reflects a coastal way of life shaped by place — where the natural environment is not simply a backdrop, but an ongoing source of creative expression.

Through original artwork and contemporary swim and resort wear, DJARRNGAN translates this connection to the coast into a distinctive fashion identity.

THE VISION

DJARRNGAN is an evolving creative expression of art, fashion, culture and coastal identity. Its vision is to continue developing a distinctive Australian swim and resort-wear label, bringing original artwork and a strong sense of place into contemporary design.

For Gabrielle, DJARRNGAN represents more than a fashion label. It brings together a lifetime of artistic exploration, personal experiences, cultural connection and a deep relationship with the natural environment. Like the ocean itself, there is more to the story than what appears on the surface.

Grounded in Broome, originating from Riddell Beach and inspired by Country, DJARRNGAN celebrates the relationship between creativity, cultural connection and the coastal environment.
